To all Brain Injury Association of Michigan Members and Friends;
Earlier this week Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, along with House Speaker Tom Leonard and House Insurance Committee Chair Lana Theis, announced their plan (now dubbed M-Insurance) to reform Michigan’s no-fault system. The plan is an utter disaster.
By all accounts, M-Insurance would have devastating impacts on drivers, families, accident victims, hospitals and rehabilitation centers if passed. It would increase litigation and legal costs that the original no-fault legislation was designed to eliminate. And worse, the so-called “consumer savings” incurred on the front end would be shifted back onto the shoulders of Michigan taxpayers in the form of increased Medicaid payments to underinsured accident victims. As I write this, our legal experts are uncovering even more hidden hazards within this toxic piece of legislation that would completely eviscerate any semblance of benefits for injured victims.
On the other hand, the package of bills announced by CPAN at our Annual Fall Conference – known as the Fair and Affordable No-Fault Reform Package – addresses the root causes of Michigan’s exorbitant auto insurance rates and provides sustainable and responsible solutions for controlling costs, rooting out all fraud, creating transparency/, and putting an end to nefarious rating practices (redlining) by auto insurers.
Next Tuesday, October 3rd at the House Office Building (Room 519), Lansing, MI, the M-Insurance bill (HB 5013) will be introduced to the House Insurance Committee in Lansing. It is expected that the committee will continue deliberations on the bill on Thursday, October 5th at the same location. Sessions begin at9am; however, I would ask that you try to arrive by 8am so that we can first accommodate and special needs and ensure we have a full house when the session begins.
Make no mistake: there has never been a more critical need for you to show your support. Many of us will be providing testimony against M-Insurance and for our Fair and Affordable Package solution. I’m asking that you make every effort to attend these sessions so that we fill the room (as well as the additional rooms) to standing-room-only capacity.
MAKE YOUR VOICES HEARD: Now is the time for us to all descend upon the State Capitol as a unified community to show let our lawmakers know that “M-Insurance is a Monumental Mistake” with disastrous consequences for all Michiganders!
Attached is a map for your convenience. Please call our office with any questions.
I look forward to seeing you all there.
